GRAHAM FARISH N-GAUGE MODELS
I am grateful to Richard Hompstead for bringing to my attention an article he has read on rmweb.co.uk. Richard writes:

"The owner and manager of the rmweb forum has published an apology from Dennis Lovett, the Public Relations Manager of Bachmann Europe, who admits that the recently-released model buses are to the wrong (non-British) N scale. He says that through an error in translation, the subcontractors have produced them at 2mm (fine) scale, or a ratio of 1:152 instead of 1:144, the standard British N scale. However, those rmweb members who have measured them think that they are much closer to 1:160, or the Japanese/US version of N scale.

As yet, apart from admitting the error and apologising, Dennis Lovett has not yet made any comment as to what Bachmann/Graham Farish will do about these incorrect models, nor about their intentions for the as-yet unreleased (hopefully untooled) models!  (The Harrington Cavalier, Bristol VR and RELH and Leyland National tools have all been used, all wrong scale.)"

CREATIVE MASTER NORTHCORD LTD - NEWS RELEASE
The following news release has been received from CMNL:

CMNL Situation Update

Due to the unexpected closure of the manufacturing business of our majority partner, Creative Master Limited, the production schedule of CMNL is being affected seriously. Although CMNL was trading profitably at the time, the failure of CML has impacted upon CMNL's ability to use production facilities.

In the meantime CMNL will be actively seeking out other alternative manufacturers. CMNL is independently owned and hopefully the matter will be resolved in the near future. CMNL will release more information in due course, as soon as anything further is known.

GRAHAM FARISH LODEKKA - SIZE OF MODEL
Many thanks to Brian Kemp for pointing out an apparent difference in size between the Graham Farish N-Gauge Bristol VR and the N-Gauge Oxford Diecast Routemaster, I decided to investigate. I did not have the Farish VR but had received the Eastern National Lodekka and whilst I could not lay my hands immediately on an Oxford Routemaster I did have to hand Oxford Diecast RT NRT006. Placing the models side by side the size difference is quite significant and as Brian points out he would have to display his models separately separately as they would look very strange together. Click on the links below to view a few photographs of the Eastern National Lodekka beside the Oxford RT

Photograph 1 CLICK HERE
Photograph 2 CLICK HERE
Photograph 3 CLICK HERE

Note: I do not profess to be an expert on measurements, conversions between metric and imperial or the size of the actual real buses involved. The figures are accurate to the best of my ability etc but are only an approximate guideline.

Armed with a ruler and calculator I carried out some measurements and calculations of the dimensions of the Lodekka. I based the conversion on the UK N Gauge of 1:148:

Length = 5.58cm @ 1:148 is equivalent to 858.4cm
Width = 1.5cm @ 1:148 is equivalent to  222cm
Height = 2.5cm @ 1:148 is equivalent to 370cm

Wikipedia quotes the measurements of the Lodekka as:
Length 30 feet equivalent to 914.4cm
Width 8 feet equivalent to 243.8cm
Height 13 feet 6 inches equivalent to 411.5cm

Difference in size between real bus and scaled up model @ 1:148 scale:
Model if scaled up would be:
Length 56cm short equivalent to 22 inches short
Width 21.8cm narrow equivalent to 8.6 inches narrow
Height 41.5cm short equivalent to 16.3 inches short.

Wikipedia states that N Gauge can vary between 1:148 and 1:160 and mentions an American N Gauge of 1:160. When this scale is applied the differences would be as follows:

Difference in size between real bus and scaled up model @ 1:160 scale:
Model if scaled up would be:
Length 928cm  = 13.6cm  long
Width 240cm = 3.8cm narrow
Height 400cm = 11.5cm short.

From my approximate calculations it appears that the Lodekka model is more or less 1:160 scale hence the noticeable differences in dimensions between the two models in the photos.

For info, I checked the dimensions of the Oxford RT and found it to be within 3 inches difference on all dimensions when scaled up at 1:148 scale

I hope the above is of interest, a bit of fun nothing more. Can anyone tell me whether any of the other models released by Graham Farish appear to be 1:148 scale or are they all nearer to 1:160

Foot note: Since publishing this article Brian has contacted me again having seen my photographs and advised that his Bristol VR looks to be similar in size to my Lodekka.

CREATIVE MASTER NORTHCORD LIMITED
Many thanks to Peter at Yardley Wood and Neil at Time Tunnel Models for forwarding the below news release to me which has been sent out today by john Ayrey to their customers:

MANUFACTURING DIFFICULTIES

We have just been informed by Creative Master Northcord Limited (CMNL) that their manufacturing and majority partner Creative Master Limited (CML) has been declared bankrupt.

CMNL is still trading profitably, but the loss of manufacturing facilities will further impact on production delays

Hopefully the matter will be resolved in the near future. CMNL will release more information in due course, as soon as anything further is known.

CORGI ANNOUNCE NEW LOGOS AND PACKAGING FOR THEIR BRAND
The following news has been received from Corgi:

As from January 2012 Corgi will have a new brand image in the form of a new logo and packaging design.

In 2012 the Corgi brand turns 56 years old and 2012 will be a monumental year for the Corgi brand. Firstly there are two major national events that Corgi is involved with the London 2012 Olympics and Her Majesty the Queens Diamond Jubilee. Secondly much work has been happening behind the scenes to grow the brand with new categories and ranges of products which will be announced shortly. To launch this new era of Corgi - one of Britain’s most loved toy collectables brands, from January 2012 Corgi’s brand image has been refreshed in the form of a new logo and packaging design.

Why?
Corgi is an established brand in the die-cast industry and in all of its product categories but as we move forward and grow the brand we need to have a consistent image across all our products and literature to enhance brand recognition and uniformity.

What will change?
The logo has been modified whilst keeping the historic Corgi Dog image. Secondly all non-licensed product will have new packaging ensuring uniformity across all collectable and toy ranges, and whilst making these changes we have improved not only the look but made the packaging more informative.

When will this happen?
The new packaging will be used on products released from April 2012 onwards and later in Spring new point of sale materials will be available in keeping with the new look. Please also note that sub-brand logos have had some minor changes.
